Hearing Aids

Hearing aids come in various sizes and technologies. The decision on which hearing is best will be made from in-depth discussions between you and your audiologist at Richmond Hearing Doctors. We take into account the lifestyle needs of the individual, the degree of the hearing loss, and the size of the ear.

Digital Hearing Aids

Today's daily wear hearing aids are 100% digital meaning they have tiny computer chips in them. This allows for very fast analyzing of the incoming signal to allow for clean, clear representation of the speech signal and management of anything other than speech (i.e. noise).

Most of these hearing aids have controls for feedback (whistling), noise reduction, directional amplification, and/or wireless connectivity. These features will be discussed in conjunction with your individual lifestyle needs.

Hearing Aid Styles

  • Mini BTEs – These are today's most common style of hearing aid. It sits snugly and discreetly behind the ear with a thin tube sliding into the ear canal. Many hearing losses and most ear canals can accommodate these hearing aids. Other names for this style include RITE (Receiver-In-The-Ear), RIC (Receiver-In-the-Canal), thin-tube BTEs, or Open Fit aids.
  • Standard BTEs – BTE styles are available for all degrees of hearing loss and are worn comfortably Behind-The-Ear. A small tube runs from the hearing aid into an earmold worn in the ear. All hearing losses can be fit with standard BTEs.
  • Power BTEs – These hearing aids are for individuals with very severe hearing losses. They sit behind the ear and need an earmold and tubing to send the sound into the ear canal. However, even these styles are smaller than they used to be and there are many options available today.
  • Custom ITEs – In-The-Ear hearing aids are made specifically to fit the shape of the ear canal and all the components sit inside one piece with nothing sitting behind the ear. There are various versions of custom ITEs, with the tiniest sitting in the ear canal and virtually invisible, called the Invisible-In-Canal (IIC). Most hearing aids are able to be accommodated with one of these versions.
